The Gnawing Heart

Kalina Bains

That gnawing pain of yesterday

Seems so familiar

A song, a smile and the memory is here

The pain so bittersweet

The naïve heart

The believing and crying

Always believing you loved me

I was just a moment

A moment of your journey

Of searching of growing

Like me making mistakes

Hanging onto whatever happiness

We could find

My innocence, my heart was broken

Broken but believing and hanging on

On to what should have never been

You carelessly stole from me

What was so precious

As though it was all right

To tear my heart in pieces

I can look back

In moments like this

I remember the pain

My aching, jealous heart

My desperate longing

My pain of unknowing
